“ If anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me -to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea“
Matthew 18:6 ( NIV)
One of the most amazing facts about child abuse to me, is that so very little effort is actually put into stopping it. Child trafficking, child predators rarely get justice served to them. Let me give you some eye-popping statistics I collected from the FBI site.
- Only 1-10% of all child molesting incidents are ever even reported.
- 89% of the offenders are somebody you and your child know, family or friends.
- There are 400k registered child molesters on the USA, and about 100k of them are missing.
- Between 1-5% of our population molest children
- 2/3 of all prisoners incarcerated for rape were for raping a child.
- 1/2 of all child predators go back to jail within 1 year of being released.
- 80% of offenders are at least of average intelligence.
These are some mind-blowing statistics. It would be overwhelming enough if those numbers were accurate, but if you read carefully through those facts, you will notice that it must represent a tiny fraction of what is really going on. If only 1-10% incidents of child molestation are ever reported, you do the math. Now we are looking at up to 4 million offenders in the USA. It is also scary to think that one organized group of molesters, priests of the Catholic church represent roughly 10% of all the offenders. How scary is that?
We also have Human Trafficking as a huge problem, which is child molestation wrapped in a different package.
- 800,000 kids are trafficked across international borders annually.
- The average cost of a ” sex slave” is 90$.
- The busiest day of the year for trafficking is Superbowl Sunday.
- 80% of those trafficked are for sexual purposes and 20% for labor.
- There are about 30 million slaves in the world today.
Of course after those two categories of abuse we have child abuse of a different nature. Hitting your child, endangering them in some way. Every state as some form of agency to monitor this, and as we have all heard, they can literally yank your kid from your house if they feel you are abusing them. There is much awareness about this and I believe people at least think twice before punching their child in the face or pouring scalding hot liquid on them as a form of punishment. At least there is some accountability.
For the purpose of this post, it is the sex offenders I want to address. I just posted two days ago how frustrated I am, that even as a social worker, I cannot get anyone to even take a report or look into a case involving a catholic priest who has been molesting the same 7 boys for two years.
I landed in the middle of it and ended up collecting all the evidence, statements, witnesses and even a victim and his statement naming all names times and dates. You would not have to hire Colombo for this case. Even the church found him guilty, but they have different rules for punishment. In this case it was an early paid retirement and a promise to pray and do penance. No law involved. I got this information from the head of the diocese, so it’s not me guessing. I have an email stating this. Yet when I went to the local police department to hand over the evidence they were not interested. I then went to the state police who said I need Children and Families, who also refused to take a report. I called the local states attorney and they also declined. Lastly I called the FBI sex crimes division, and they too did not take a report. Is there any wonder why the catholic church condones, supports and in some cases encourages priests molesting little kids?
I posted a few months ago an article about a bishop in New York who publicly stated that he was pushing for a change in the law, so the age of consensual sex between a priest and a child would be seven years old. Yes you read it right, seven. Now you can have a borderline IQ and figure out that the church is not heading the direction of making laws tough on pedopriests, but actually trying to make it legal to do so. If that is not supporting pedophilia in the church I do not know what it is.
Lets imagine what would happen if you or I got caught molesting our neighbors child. Busted. Do you think we would also get the free pass? I think not. The average sentence in the USA for a sex crime on a child is 11 years. But why the difference? Should it not be that the ” role models ” like men in cloth should be held to an even higher standard than the average citizen? Heck, even held to the same standard would be nice. But in the Catholic church the law is a moot point. The question is – why?
All the way from decades ago the Catholic church has been quietly getting laws passed that protect them from prosecution for pedophilia. They have more loopholes to void any prosecution than any other criminal enterprise. So we obviously can see that despite what the church spokespersons say in the media, about their being ” a few bad apples “, the truth is the church is one of the biggest child molesting rackets in the world. Instead of a few bad apples, its likely that the amount of Catholic priests that have been involved in child grooming and molestation is on the wrong side of 70%. There are a few priests out there who are in it for the right reasons. Not many though.
Why are the rules different for the clergy? Why are all the agencies in law enforcement turning a deaf ear to these crimes? Are they all on the payroll? Are some of them pedophiles themselves? Are they intimidated by the bully lawyers the church will sic on them if they open their mouth? I don’t know the answer to that question, but I sure do want one. Something has to change. I think it is time that the public formally gets involved and starts demanding answers. I think its time Catholic parishioners pull the plug on their million dollar donations and weekly offerings until we are sure that money is not being used to defend priests on court or pay off victims.
Speaking of payoffs,I have mentioned this before, but in case you missed, the amount of cash to date the Catholic church has paid to victims to shut their mouths and drop charges against priests, is about 6 Billion dollars. Yes that is a B not an M. Billion. That is a lot of molesting. If 1-10% of molestation get reported, then let’s do a little math using the Catholic churches own numbers. Their site called Bishops Accountablity ( google it) has a list of all priests either past or presently under investigation for sexual abusing a child. Now keep in mind the 1-10% figure-they report about 30k priests under investigation. Now imagine if that number should be 10x bigger!! That is reality.
The one thing I do know is that there is alot more pedophiles out there than people think. It bothers me very much that when I write about any other topic the amount of interest, likes and feedback is always higher than about this topic. It scares the you know what out of me. You figure it out. Is child pornography and pedophilia so prevalent that many people reading this will just pass it by or not even want to discuss it because they themselves are either involved in it or condone it? I am trying hard not to believe that but the numbers speak for themselves.
I am open and interested in any feedback or ideas or help in brain storming ideas on how to start an initiative to address this huge issue. I cannot tackle this by myself and I am hoping some people will want to do something about it. The outlet that has the power to make all this public is the media, but it takes numbers to get the media’s attention. They will stick with the local car thefts until they are pressured into looking into this pedopriest issue. I don’t want hear about how great the FBI is for catching one of their most wanted fugitives who stole a car and robbed 6 banks and fled to Mexico.
How about the screams of the little boys being raped by priests every single hour of every single day. When will you all start hearing those cries? Who cares about a bank robber when kids by the thousands are being tormented and will likely live a terrible life of depression or suicide as a result? Where does that rate?
I welcome your comments and ideas. God knows somebody has to do something. Priests are not supposed to be chasing alter boys around the altar.
