Does Algebra Add Up? Lets Do The Math.

Does Algebra Add Up? Lets Do The Math.

I was quite excited a few weeks ago when I was asked by one of my kids to help with her Algebra homework. As I boldly and confidently approached the table where she was seated, I recalled the last time I took on an equation. It was high school I believe, when I was forced to take the class myself.
Several minutes into the work, I opted for the most logical solution; I gave my daughter a good talking to about keeping up with her classwork.
Surely I have used Algebra at some point in my life- after all these years I must have found a use for it and a reason to use it. Sure, I suppose we use it when we pump gas, by figuring out how many gallons we can get for a certain amount of money. Maybe we accidently use it in other ways too, but as I found out on this day, algebra is useless to the average person.
Even if I was going to attempt to use algebra for a few days ( like if I lost a bet or something )I would have to jump right on Lumosity to get some practice memorizing things, so I could remember how Algebra works. I think what I am trying to get at here, is that a very small percent of students will attend Harvard, or be using it in their careers. I think algebra is another roadblock for kids to make it through an already tough curriculum. They don’t need to solve for x. They need a reason to stay in school, not another one to drop out. Lets keep the relevant learning coming, and initiate some school to work efforts before middle school is as far as kids make it anymore.

I have a great desire to help others make it through times that I myself have had to navigate. I understand the process, the pain, and the support needed. I, and the rest of my team all have both the formal education to coach others but more importantly we also have the life experience which allows us to relate to all the phases and hurdles that come with recovering from issues like depression, addiction, domestic violence, spiritual confusion, and much more. I feel that the combination of formal training and life experience allows us to meet those we help every point of need- in a real way.

  1. I agree! There truly are some useless areas of curriculum in schools. Even working in accounting, I never did algebra. As a matter of fact, the most complex math problems was division, which really isn’t complex at all. As you said, schools should focus more on what’s important, and keeping our kids in school.

    1. Thanks for the comment. I am amazed at how the system is set up. My daughter has strengths in areas lie doing hair and make up. LOL! She has to pass geometry and all that to be able to move forward with a career. Lets test the kids in 8th grade for what they are skilled at, and begin shaping their careers from there.
